Not Just Another Tech Blog

My Internal Dilemma & Revelation
I’ve debated whether or not to even make this post, but in the end decided to go forward because it lends itself to the the overall vision I have for this site as well as my other web properties. Over the past few weeks I’ve become involved in several foward thinking web communities which have totally made rethink what I want from the web and what is possible. These two communities are Blog Mastermind and the other one is Seth Godin’s Tribes. Both are highly innovative members-only communities which I absolutely love. They are definitely worth checking out.
So What’s The Problem With The Site?
Back to the point, after spending time in these communities and sharing with others in them, I realized that my focus was not quite clear. I really didn’t have a vision for HighTechSister.com. Rather I was just going through the motions and this site was fast becoming just another tech blog in a sea of millions. And while I’m a very technical person and have tons of tech tips I could disperse, this is not the path I want take. I don’t want to be a tip of the week blogger. As my community began to grow little by little, I began to feel pressured to produce a blog post everyday to keep traffic flowing. This isn’t good for me or the blog. Quality and reusable content definitely reigns supreme over quantity. I’m not saying that I’m not going to post content similar to articles found in my archives. What I am saying is that these probably won’t make up the bulk of the content as I slowly refine and develop the focus of this site.
Where’s The Site Headed?
My real passion is finding ways to integrate computer science, drawing, and stories. Specifically I am interested in developing interactive applications that incorporate all three. Currently I am doing independent research in data structures, data mining, parser generation, and language development so this site will organically transform into a sounding board as well as a showcase for what I learn during the course of this research. Over time it will become more cohesively integrated with some of my other internet projects and will serve to shed light on their technical backbone and infrastructure.
So over the course of the past few weeks, I’ve been stepping back and doing a lot of stuff in the background for the site. These things may not be apparent for a while as I retool structure and backend elements of the site and eventually the site’s frontend.
Are You Still Going To Blog Regularly?
Of course! I’m not abandoning this site by any means. I’m just re-evaluating its focus, so content variety will increase.

Hi Kim,
Fellow Triiibe member here. One thing that might help you with your dilemma could be having more than one blog. I’d find where the two things you write about the most intersect, and keep that theme for this blog (as long it’s related to technology.) Then pour all your energy into that, until you have a regular base.
Then you could spin the other topic out into a new blog. Tell Yaro I said hi, he’s been a good blog pal to me.

Thanks for the comment. I think I’m sort of going in the direction you are suggesting. I have some other blogs that I am working on, I just wanted to shift focus of this one slightly while still staying in technology.
Thanks,
Kim

I specialed during my master on Data Mining and Information Visualization, and allthough I am not doing much in that direction anymore, it still has a warm place in my heart. So I am looking forward to your posts in that direction. Good luck with your blog!August 5th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
