Part 1: Promote Your Blog With Twitter

Ok, I’m going to give the technical side of my brain a rest for today and discuss some ways to promote your blog.  The technology I want to talk about today is Twitter.  When I first came across twitter a few months ago I dismissed it not knowing what type of value it could possibly offer.  Heck, I still don’t know if it is going to be of any value to me or my sites but I am willing to take it for a spin.

So the first thing I am doing is learning as much as I can about twitter and relaying and implementing that information as it pertains to this site.  For twitter to pay off you have to put a decent amount of time into it.  It may even be the case that twitter is lagniappe for blogs that already have an established following.  Indeed many of the top twitters with some of the largest followings already had well established blogs.  Check Darren Rowse’s extremely popular blog which had a huge following way before twitter came along then check out his twitter feed which has a large following.  However investigating this as a tool can’t hurt much.  With that said this is going to be the first in a series of blogs posts about twitter.  There is just too much relevant information to sum up in just one post.  Today we are going to discuss setting up twitter, customizing your page, and a few other tidbits.

The first thing to do is go to twitter and sign up for an account.  Pretty much all this entails is choosing a username and password.  Bingo, you are now apart of the twitter community. You are done! SIKE!! Wouldn’t it be great if that’s all you had to do.  No your job is just beginning.  I’ve had a twitter account for a little more than a month now and haven’t really done anything with it.  And let me tell you, people are not going to flock to you and build up a following for no reason.

The next thing I decided to do was customize my twitter page.  Everyone starts with the same generic twitter page so changing it will help you stand out from the crowd.  Twitter is very basic and there is not much to change in the way of design elements.  But you can load you own custom background and change some of the color and text settings.  Check out the basic twitter page I made for this blog and one more customized for 99Drawing:100 Days.  *Also note that once you join twitter the big JOIN TODAY banner goes away.

Now that you’ve set up twitter account and customized your page, what do you need to do now?  What can we do with this new tool?  This will be the subject of the next article in the series so check back soon!
